Cristina Lei Rodriguez’s father is an avid collector of rare orchids. Watching this daily care relationship unfold across decades reaffirms the critical importance of observational research and close, attached looking. As his Parkinson's progresses, Cristina Lei Rodriguez takes over the care and maintenance of these delicate flowers, continuing her father’s relational practice and  binding herself to its fragile beauty. One thing leads to the next (Summer 2023) is a series of 26 paintings on paper, using mixed media ranging from thick paint to jade beads. The works unfold as a visual journal, created with the parameter that each work lends a visual component, a piece of itself to the next drawing; meditating on the generational traditions kept alive through a father and daughter’s attention. The series pushes in from representation towards an emotional material position articulated through dense abstraction. “Each work is an opportunity to see an idea through to its fullest, to put all my love and worry and awe into one moment.”
